About

Stefania Gheorghiu, LCMFT

Born in Romania, I was raised in the U.S since the age of 6. Having grown up in a multicultural environment, I have a perspective unique to many other first and second generation Americans. As such, I am passionate about working with couples and individuals who know what it is like to navigate two (or more) cultures and find belonging in a foreign world. My clients are people from diverse backgrounds including members of the immigrant community, military families, and diplomats. I discovered my interest in Psychology during my undergraduate studies at Smith College, and honed my skills as a systemic therapist in the Couples and Family Therapy program at UMD, College Park where I received my Master's of Science degree. In my work, I aim to empower my clients through acceptance, understanding, empathy, and challenge as we work together to navigate new ways of moving through life in order to achieve your goals. My therapeutic technique draws from various systemic models based on the client’s needs including: Cognitive-Behavioral, Emotionally-Focused, and Trauma-informed therapeutic approaches. My work with individuals and couples centers around making meaning of current and past lived experiences, navigating significant life transitions, managing anxiety, depression and ADHD symptoms, and healing from loss and abandonment. I also work with those impacted by substance abuse/addiction or those wishing to re-evaluate their relationship with drugs and alcohol. I see couples at any stage of the relationship (dating, pre-marital, married, contemplating divorce/separation) and I am passionate about helping partners rebuild intimacy and trust after infidelity.
